There are some fantastic scenes involving getting new clothes for the prisoners. Soon after his arrival, the Italians surrender that the camp is left vacant. Upon arriving in the Camp, Sinatra finds out that he is the highest ranking POW and becomes the leader. Both the British and American POW’s as well as the Italian guards despise the Commandant of the Camp. He is taken to a POW camp run by a mini-Italian dictator. The chase scene is one of the most memorable scenes ever filmed. Steve McQueen embarks on a daring motorcycle ride to try to cross into the Swiss border. Of course one of the most famous scenes occurs after the escape. The POW’s think of everything from forging fake German identity papers to hand sewing and coloring civilian clothes.
So what do you do with the dirt from digging the tunnel? The POW’s come up with a genius method for that too. To brace the tunnel ceiling and walls from collapsing, the POW’s begin to take as much wood from their bunks and cabin infrastructure that they can. Bronson digs, and Coburn comes up with an ingenious manually powered bellows to provide air circulation and oxygen in the tunnel. They decide to dig a tunnel from under one of the cabins that exits beyond the perimeter and into the forest.Ĭharles Bronson and James Coburn run the digging operation.

The Great Escape is about a German run Allied POW Camp that houses the most problematic allied prisoners who are constantly trying to escape. Hulka because he can whip maggots like John Candy, Bill Murray and Harold Ramis into lean, mean fighting machines in a humorous movie while maintaining the tough as nails Drill Sgt we expect in American movies, whether they be comedies, drama, or action movies.
HULKA STRIPES ZIP
Hilarity ensues throughout the entire movie when Hulka asserts his authority over his trainees during basic training and the rescue mission of his unit from Czechoslovakia when they “Zip In and Zip Out” like they where going to Wisconsin. Hulka later meets up with his unit in Europe when they become assigned to a special unit operating an Urban Assault Vehicle. Sergeant Hulka was injured by an errant mortar during basic training forcing his inductees to complete basic training on their own. Sergeant Hulka was the Drill Sergeant in Stripes who whipped John Candy, Harold Ramis, and Bill Murray into shape during basic training. We start the month by profiling Sgt Hulka from the movie Stripes. In fact, Gossett did such a good job in this movie, that it earned him an Academy award.Īn Officer and A Gentleman is a must see.ĭecember is our favorite Movie Sergeant Month. He makes Mayo clean the stairs with a toothbrush after Mayo is caught with contraband. His discipline methods are pretty good as well. But if a candidate tries their absolute best, he’ll help them with that extra push where needed. He really puts the screws to his candidates while instilling discipline. Starting out as a selfish loner, Mayo learns to be a team player and leader among his peers. But Mayo never gives up and finds something in himself along the way.
Gossett tries his best to get Mayo to D.O.R (Drop On Request) to drop out. Debra Winger gives an outstanding performance as, Paula, his love interest too. Among those is Richard Gere as Officer Candidate Mayo. plays a Marine Drill Sergeant whose job it is to weed out weak Officer Candidates.
